Intersection Level of Traffic Stress: How Much Do Intersections Affect Low-Stress Bike Accessibility?

Presented at International Cycling Safety Conference (ICSC 2026), 2026

Extends the Level of Traffic Stress framework to intersection crossings (xLTS 1 to 4) and tests how much crossings add to the barrier created by street segments. In Boston and Montreal, 89% of crossings had the lowest stress, but 1,199 and 814 critical crossings respectively break up low-stress routes. In Boston, the share of jobs reachable on an LTS 1 route falls from 0.9% to 0.2% once crossing stress is counted, and from 12.1% to 10.9% at LTS 2.
